The research and technology innovation portfolio targets investments needed to identify emerging opportunities in all blue economy portfolios.

Fisheries and Aquaculture

The fisheries and aquaculture portfolio targets testing of innovative closed-cycle invertebrate aquaculture technologies, fisheries catch documentation and traceability, waterfront redevelopment for aquaculture facilities, and village-based aquaculture enterprises.

Habitat Restoration

The habitat restoration portfolio targets investment in the restoration and maintenance of the health and optimal functioning of those coastal and marine ecosystems that provide the underlying ecological services essential for supporting and sustaining a blue economy.

Blue Economy Hub

The vision is to position the US Caribbean as a HUB for the development of an integrated and innovative Blue Economy. Blue economy portfolios are depicted around a ship’s wheel, that can turn based on investment priorities in established and emerging sectors. Blue economy workstreams emphasize the need for investments in the cross-cutting initiatives to catalyze and advance all blue economy portfolios.

Ocean Recreation

The ocean recreation portfolio targets investment in service industry infrastructure and public and visitor education to reduce recreation impacts on the marine environment.

Marine Debris Management

The marine debris management portfolio targets investments in appropriate and new technologies for marine waste reduction to reduce the source of marine debris as well as in water removal of marine debris.

Coastal Resilience/Disaster Preparedness

The coastal resilience portfolio targets investment in building coastal community resilience through planning, education and training, disaster preparedness, protecting and enhancing ecosystem services through habitat restoration and citizenry engagement, based on best available science, research, and technology innovation.

Maritime Transportation

The marine transportation portfolio targets investment in expanding interisland ferry services and yacht repair capacity while incentivizing clean energy sources to power maritime transportation systems and autonomous navigation technologies to increase access and safety while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
